Spring Garden

An explosion of colour with Lucy Summers Living

Spring garden

Our glorious garden, designed by garden guru Lucy Summers, will be one of the highlights of your day out at the Spring Fair. Lucy has created an engaging and colourful design inspired by ‘glamping’. The garden is bound to provoke comment with its jazzy 70s VW Camper Van complete with roof, planted with delicious fruits and vegetables. It will be evocative of all that’s great about British spring time; fruit trees beginning to blossom, spring flowers bursting out and a vintage beehive. Six fruit trees stand like sentinels at each corner and at the midpoints to add form and symmetry to the design.  The containers housing the trees will even have an edible cushion covering of camomile or mustard cress! Visitors to the Fair can expect to see a variety of seasonal edible produce including tomatoes, aubergines and beans and the borders will be planted up with spring flowers.

As well as being a stupendous sight, our Spring Garden will play host to a series of talks and demos on everything from bee keeping to growing your own lettuces. See timetable below for the programme of events.

Honey Bees, Yes Please

Sara Ward of Hen Corner first trained at River Cottage in Dorset and has been keeping bees in her London garden since 2011. Sara was thrilled to win Best Honey in London at the National Honey Show in 2012 and now runs regular courses encouraging others to explore this fascinating hobby.

Who is in the hive? What do they do throughout the year? How about the honey? These are just some of the questions that Sara will be answering in this session.

Lay a Little Egg for Me

Sara Ward of Hen Corner started keeping chickens in 2006; her aim at the time was to prepare just one meal with ingredients gathered solely from the garden. Now with fifteen free range hens she has more than enough eggs for family and friends as well. Sara will be looking at the rewards and responsibilities of urban hens and how to keep them safe and secure whilst living in the city.

Simple Spring Supper Gathered from the Garden

Whilst producing your own food requires some time and commitment, the rewards are second to none! Sara Ward of Hen Corner will be demonstrating how to cook her favourite meal of griddled asparagus, poached egg and Hollandaise sauce with ingredients foraged solely from the garden!

Make Your Garden Irresistible to Birds

One way to make your garden wildlife-friendly is to see it through the eyes of a bird. Can you get food and water while keeping an eye out for predators? Is there any escape route? Is there a dry, sheltered place to make a nest? In this talk we’ll look at ways to make your garden, however small, utterly irresistible to birds.

Ten Animals You Should Aim to See in Your Garden

Bring your outside space to life with a host of wild visitors you can watch buzzing, snuffling and hopping through the garden. You could even be helping to save some of our rarer creatures: come along and find out just how easy it is to create your own mini nature oasis.

Garden Floristry

Georgie Newbery, artisan flower farmer and florist, demonstrates how to make a gorgeous hand-tie bouquet with the kinds of flowers you might have growing in your garden.

Author of The Flower Farmer’s Year, Georgie specialises in using only flowers grown in the UK (mostly by herself in her seven acre garden in Somerset) and is a speaker who will inspire you to look at your garden and the contents of your vases in a completely different way.  Her talk covers growing, cutting, conditioning and arranging flowers from your garden, while bringing in all sorts of information, ranging from the behemoth that is the world cut flower market, to how to make compost teas. There is also always plenty of time for questions at the end.

Grow Your Own Confectionery

Your garden holds some hidden gems when it comes to making your own confectionery, and making stunning confections doesn't have to be a difficult process. Fiona Sciolti of Sciolti Chocolates is an expert at hunting down those little extra bonuses from your herb and floral garden, and showing you how to achieve delicious treats.

Fiona is an award winning international chocolatier who has worked in the Tropics creating stunning, natural confectionery. In 2015, she will be once more be spending Easter inspiring the pastry team at one of the top global resorts in the Maldives.

Garden Sell Off

As of 1pm on Sunday, the team from Lucy Summers Living will be selling off the gorgeous flowers, shrubs, topiary and veggies that feature in the Spring Garden. Stop by and pick up some beautiful seasonal additions for your own garden!
