CAN TO CANDLE is a small batch candle company based just outside Edinburgh, in the pretty Midlothian countryside. each candle is hand poured and packaged in our workshop, using only 100% soy wax, cotton-core wicks and paraben free, fine fragrance oil to ensure a clean and long lasting burn.

We met up with Kerrylyn Bell to find out more…

How did it all start?

It all started with Pinterest when I saw citronella candles in recycled tin cans. After I made the candle I showed it to some friends who were impressed with it and everything really started from there. I was keen to get back into the work place but with three young children and living in a rural location needed something home based that would draw on my creative side shaped in the interior design career I previously had.

The story behind the name…

I began making candles and putting the candles in cans.

Where are you based?

I am based in rural Midlothian in the conservation village of Temple.

What inspires you?

Living in the countryside I walk for forty five minutes every morning and draw inspiration from the colour changes of the seasons, the changing light and the sound of bird song.

What is your creation process?

I have a notebook which I carry with me wherever I go so I can jot down ideas and inspirations which then can be expanded when I get back home to my kitchen table where I transform ideas into reality in the peace and tranquillity.

What makes you, your brand or products unique?

Everything is made in house by hand and we try to be as environmentally friendly as possible by using old wax for firelighters and re-usable packing materials. By offering workshops and attending craft fairs and pop ups I get to know my customers and have become friends with many of them.

What is your next project?

The next project is to set up an online workshop so people can learn how to make candles from the comfort of their own homes.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

To develop a range of scented candles from re-used wax, we currently offer a citronella garden candle for the summer months.

What is your biggest achievement?

Winning the Beauty Shortlist Editors Choice 2018 for my Plum and Rhubarb candle.

What is your best-selling product/line?

My Fireside Classic can candle.

What do you love about Country Living Fairs?

Meeting all my customers and making new ones and working alongside fellow crafts people.

Your three top tips for crafters and makers…

Market research to make sure your product will sell. Test, test and test again your product to make sure it is ready for market. Don’t be afraid to adapt your product if you find your customers like it in a different way.

Any advice for fledgling businesses…

Don’t give up, invest money when available in good photography.
