Tell us a little bit about your work…

Scottish Honeyberry Growers is a farmers’ cooperative that was formed in 2017. Honeyberries are edible honeysuckles packed with polyphenols, anthocyanins, antioxidants, vitamin C, and potassium. All the goodness packed in them makes the Honeyberry a super fruit.

How did it all start?

One of our growers was on their honeymoon in Japan and came across Honeyberries in various products (in Japan, the berries are known as “the berry of longevity”). Intrigued by the health benefits and cultivation methods, he did some more research. Subsequently, a group of farmers visited Canada, where Honeyberries have been grown commercially, to learn more. The fact that Honeyberries thrive in our climate in Scotland due to their frost resistance and hardy nature made them a perfect fit. Honeyberry plants bloom in February/March, which is early, and for cross-pollination, we rely on native Masonry Bees and Bumblebees. The orchards are surrounded by wildflower strips to provide food for the bees and encourage their visits.
