BOOK FAIR tickets HERE Tell us a little bit about your work… My journey began after a visit to Hambledon Hill in Dorset. It’s an old fort near where I grew up, it’s huge and mountainous and full of lovely foliage. Visiting during lockdown, I collected lots of flowers. I had planned to dry them, but I ended up drawing the flowers instead. My drawing accidentally turned into a repeat design, and suddenly I had designed my first print. And the rest… well, has led me to where I am today. Where are you based? I’m based in North London. Currently, I live in an eccentric old house packed to the rafters with artwork and antiques. It’s like a museum, full of inspiration and little design details. The house was set up as a guardianship scheme to help creatives find a place in the city. I’m incredibly lucky to have a studio space there that’s painted sunshine yellow, which brightens my mood every time I walk in. It’s messy and chaotic, which is just how I like it. I’m hoping to stay there as long as possible. What inspires you? It would be hard to point to one thing in particular, but most often I find inspiration in the world around me; the moments and memories, the people and places that mean something to me. For example, my Windswept print was born from a gusty, thunderous walk home from visiting a close friend. The leaves were swirling around me, and although it was a bit of a stressful journey, the whole experience set off a very specific and magical feeling which I wanted to capture. All of my prints are like that to some degree; they’re inspired by the people and places I encounter, and I love finding the motifs and visual language that capture that very special place and time. The idea that those stories could go so far as to bring beauty to someone’s home is incredibly exciting. BOOK FAIR tickets HERE What is your creation process?   It all starts with the idea that lives in my head. From there, the sketches come; lots and lots of rough ideas, all different motifs, all relating to each other in different ways. I don’t keep a sketchbook – I prefer to draw on anything and everything I can find. I’m looking for something that feels natural, that makes sense, but at the same time captures the unique essence of that initial inspiration, whether that’s a juxtaposition or a visual tension.Often I use the lino format directly for this experimentation process, testing print after print until it’s just right. The best part is finally revealing the finished design on the fabric for the first time, discovering all the imperfections and personality that make that print unique – it’s addictive, and as soon as I ‘finish’ one print, I want to start the next. What makes you, your brand or products unique? It’s a difficult question, but if nothing else, it’s down to the personal experiences that inspire my prints – after all, no one else can call them theirs. I try to put a lot of my personality and character into my prints. At the same time, I think my process is important too. I don’t necessarily focus on how the design might look on a headboard or the like, but try to imagine my prints in places that might not be expected, whether that’s wallpaper in a fish and chip shop or adorning an artist’s outfit. I believe that those two elements give my designs a personality and liveliness that’s unique to Calver, wherever they appear. What is your next project? Designing a new collection of patterns, meeting and collaborating with other creatives, and sharing my designs with a larger audience.I’d love to work with more interior designers and see Calver’s designs come to life on new and exciting projects. To see my patterns used in places that already inspire me, like my favourite venues and interiors across London, would be very special. What is your biggest achievement? I don’t think anyone realises how much work goes into a website! The photography, the writing… it transforms a hobby into something that’s so much more. It can’t be rushed, especially when you’re trying to create a digital platform that is true to you. So I’d probably say my website. That said, I’ve never done a fair before, so Country Living has taken up a huge amount of my time. We’re not quite there yet, but fingers crossed! What are you looking forward to the most about exhibiting at the Christmas Fair?Country Living will be Calver’s first-ever fair! I only started my brand a few years ago, and I’ve been wanting to do a fair for ages. I’ve heard lots of great things about Country Living’s Christmas Fair – I’m looking forward to sharing my patterns in a physical space, especially at Christmas, which is such a lovely time of year. Your three top tips for crafters and makers… Tip number 1: Work hard to find your ideas. We’re surrounded by the work of amazing people, and it’s easy to get caught in the bubble of Pinterest and social media…That said, it’s so important to engage on social media. It’s the reality of being creative today, and, amazingly, people are so excited and passionate about discovering your process and getting to know the person behind the work. So it can’t be overlooked. And thirdly, when it comes to balancing a day job too, as I do, I think it’s super important to spend some time in a way which is neither related to the 9-5 nor your craft. Going for a long walk or using your moments on your terms gives you a precious chance to gain important perspective on your work, both creatively and otherwise. Join us in exploring the remarkable journey of Scottish Honeyberry Growers and get ready for the upcoming Fairs, where their exceptional super fruit will take centre stage. BOOK FAIR tickets HERE Tell us a little bit about your work… Scottish Honeyberry Growers is a farmers’ cooperative that was formed in 2017. Honeyberries are edible honeysuckles packed with polyphenols, anthocyanins, antioxidants, vitamin C, and potassium. All the goodness packed in them makes the Honeyberry a super fruit. How did it all start? One of our growers was on their honeymoon in Japan and came across Honeyberries in various products (in Japan, the berries are known as “the berry of longevity”). Intrigued by the health benefits and cultivation methods, he did some more research. Subsequently, a group of farmers visited Canada, where Honeyberries have been grown commercially, to learn more. The fact that Honeyberries thrive in our climate in Scotland due to their frost resistance and hardy nature made them a perfect fit. Honeyberry plants bloom in February/March, which is early, and for cross-pollination, we rely on native Masonry Bees and Bumblebees. The orchards are surrounded by wildflower strips to provide food for the bees and encourage their visits. What inspires you? Scottish Honeyberry Growers are inspired by cultivating a healthy, versatile berry that promotes bee activity and supports healthy eating. BOOK FAIR tickets HERE What is your creation process?   Sustainability, wellbeing, staying true to our brand, and all-natural elements are what we prioritize when creating new products and concepts. You have to love it to share it. What makes you, your brand or products unique?   We sell Scotland’s very own super fruit. What is your next project? Our next project involves releasing a coated range of Honeyberries, including yogurt and chocolate-covered Honeyberries. Queen Margaret University has been experimenting with potential recipes and products for us. We look forward to expanding on their hard work and continuing our collaboration. What is your biggest achievement? Our most significant achievement to date is being featured in The Hairy Bikers Go Local series on January 6, 2023. What is your best-selling product?   Our 50g Freeze-Dried Honeyberry pouch is our most popular product. What are you looking forward to the most about exhibiting at the Christmas Fair? We love the extensive range of products available for visitors, making it a fantastic day out that introduces people to many new brands. With November’s arrival, brace yourself for an enchanting festive experience, as Karen’s unique pieces promise to make this Christmas truly special. Explore Karen Borley’s captivating journey and anticipate the upcoming Fairs… BOOK FAIR tickets HERE Tell us a little bit about your work… Handmade silver and gem-set jewellery. I describe most of my work as suitable for washing up and gardening – in other words, you can wear it all the time, and it will absorb the patina of your life. I want my jewellery to become your new BFF.Even as a little girl, I loved making jewellery, and now I am thrilled to have my own jewellery business. In my youth, I worked for the famous De Beers Diamonds and fashion houses such as Mulberry; all that experience informs what I create now. Mostly silver and chunky, I design jewellery I want to wear and share with like-minded women. The Quince spirit matches the mood of sustainable fashion – made to last by talented craftspeople. How did it all start? I was looking for a new outlet for my creativity and my entrepreneurial spirit. An old friend in India reminded me of how much I already knew about jewellery and offered to introduce me to her stone dealer. So, I packed up the kids, and we went to India for half term, leaving the dogs and husband at home. We all had a blast soaking up the color, noise, and culture. What inspires you? I studied Art History, and that certainly underpins my jewellery design. I love to find the jewels in Renaissance paintings and often mimic their shapes. Historical jewels were so important as a mark of status or personality. I think today, our jewellery is still a strong statement of who we are and what the world should think about our taste and style. BOOK FAIR tickets HERE What is your creation process?   I am in my happy place, choosing gems and planning collections. I only design and make jewellery that I would love to wear myself. Shops, magazines, gardens, and junk shops are all sources of visual inspiration – I love a good rummage. I will often start with beautiful stones and work out a design from there. Shapes have to be fluid and organic; otherwise, they can be uncomfortable. Enhancing natural beauty in the color and shape of stones is very important. What makes you, your brand or products unique? Every hand that picks up a hammer makes a unique mark. I love the fact that each piece carries the marks of the hand that made it. Combined with my eye for history and color, those handmade imprints make each piece unique. What is your next project? Besides gemstones, I also love textiles. I’m so tempted to do more with textiles, but I do run the risk of getting carried away, so I’ll probably keep it very modest. We’ll see! What is your biggest achievement? I am very proud of my little business – it has come so far in the last 5 years, but two historical achievements I am very proud of.  A showcase for young art students to have their jewellery designs made in diamonds and gold and then auctioned at Harvey Nichols.   And secondly, an exhibition and book I wrote about the History of the Diamond Engagement Ring – another labour of love. What is your best-selling product?   People love my Portia earrings that combine two fabulous gemstones – the options are endless! They are elegant, timeless, and very wearable. This was one of my first designs; I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and it remains a firm favorite. What are you looking forward to the most about exhibiting at the Christmas Fair? I love that they bring the pages of the magazine to life; I’m a long-time subscriber. I also used to live in Islington, very close to the old Agricultural Hall that is now home to the London Christmas Fair. And, of course, I love meeting the other traders and returning customers. Your three top tips for crafters and makers…   Try to assess if there is a market for what you make. Do you want this to be a business rather than a hobby? Both are valid but different. Stay strong, but be open to advice. Talk to lots of people, then make up your mind. Running your own business can be tough and lonely, but also very rewarding. With Linen & Rose’s exceptional crafts and a diverse array of talented artisans, you can look forward to discovering unique and thoughtful gifts that will make this Christmas season truly special. Have a read of Sheri Mcdonagh’s story and what Harrogate has to look forward to this November… BOOK FAIR tickets HERE Tell us a little bit about your work… Linen And Rose started in 2021 with a love of crafting and a desire to create beautiful, high-quality soft furnishings and gifts with linens exclusively designed and printed in the UK. What began as a small venture in August 2021 quickly blossomed, progressing from selling on online crafting marketplaces to running my own website and recently opening a lovely store in Tadcaster, Yorkshire. How did it all start? The spark for Linen and Rose was ignited when I made some cushions for my own home. A friend began to ask for their own, and I thought, ‘Why not give the crafting market a go?’ To my amazement and absolute delight, others loved my creations. From there, Linen and Rose was born. My family encouraged me all the way, and I could not have moved this forward without their support and encouragement. We decided to create some studio space by converting our garage, so the builders were called, and the studio was created. I quickly made the decision that I wanted to use linens that were designed and printed in the UK, and that still stands today. What inspires you? For me, it’s my family that constantly fuels my passion. My husband may not share my same affinity for beautiful linens, but his unwavering support for me to pursue my dreams is priceless. And then, of course, my dear customers! When they drop by my stands or the shop and share their feedback or compliments, it genuinely warms my heart. Their words mean the world to me and make every moment of this journey worthwhile. BOOK FAIR tickets HERE What is your creation process?   Everything starts in my doodle book. Even though I might not be the best artist, I’m a very visual thinker. So, I sketch out my ideas and often add little linen swatches directly onto the drawings. If I’m feeling good about the design at that point, I’ll start cutting a pattern. It’s hardly ever the case that my first pattern hits the mark, but that’s what I find so exciting about the process! I love having the flexibility to tweak and adjust my designs as I go along. It’s all part of the creative journey! What makes you, your brand or products unique? My guiding principle is if I don’t absolutely love something, I don’t make it. I believe in staying true to myself and the things I create. From the initial idea, to designing patterns, cutting, sewing, and finally selling, I’m involved in every step of the process. My brand is a reflection of who I am – Sheri.  What is your next project? I have my heart set on crafting a quaint range of wall hanging baskets and organizers. Earlier this year, I made a few samplers, and one of my delightful customers snapped them up. Since then, time has been a bit tight, but I’m eager to dive back in.So, come the New Year, these beauties are topping my ‘To Do’ list. Plus, I’ll be working on some fresh ideas for kitchen storage. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to get started! What is your biggest achievement? Transitioning from a tiny studio to a two-story retail space where the entire creative process unfolds, was something beyond my wildest dreams. The tremendous support I’ve received from the local community and my wonderful followers on social media has been simply heartwarming. It truly is a dream come true!  What is your best-selling product?   Usually, I would say lampshades, and these are my best sellers all year round. However, at Christmas there is a little competition between the lampshades and LED Lanterns, each covered in pretty linen. I think the Lantern takes over as a best seller as it makes the perfect gift with an LED tealight and gift bag for just £15. They were a sell out daily last year.    What are you looking forward to the most about exhibiting at the Christmas Fair?   My brand resonates beautifully with the spirit of Country Living, making it feel like a perfect match. The atmosphere at these Fairs is simply amazing. The team puts in endless effort to transform the shopping experience into a memorable journey for customers. What’s more, they ensure that the exhibitors are part of that journey, making it feel like a true partnership. It’s this sense of community and collaboration that I absolutely adore.  Your three top tips for crafters and makers… 1. Keep going, no matter what. There will be ups and downs, brilliant days and tough ones, but don’t let that deter you. 2. Embrace the power of planning. I’m a huge fan of the doodle book, where you can jot down your creative sparks whenever they strike. Bring those ideas to life!  3. Do what you love. Your passion shines through your creations and trust me, others can see it and will fall in love with your work too!  More information on Linen & Rose can be found here.
